Well. It’s after macworld, and I think I’ve reverse-switched.
Don’t get me wrong, I do still love the Mac. I enjoyed MacWorld 03, and think apple is doing some really neat things with Safari (I think the choice for KHTML was brilliant!). I’d also love to have one of those 12” powerbook G4s. But with my current rig, and not being able to afford a new machine, it’s just getting too damned frustrating to try and use my mac as a production machine.
So, I’ve started the process of slowly sorting and moving files that have lived on my mac on to my Windows desktop and/or server machine(s).
The first step this week was converting many of the current or new invoices for distinctPixel (which at this point, are still painfully done by hand) from QuarkXPress (mac) to Adobe InDesign (windows). (btw: fuck you, Quark—I’ve always hated you.)
I’ve also moved my printer (a GCC EliteXL 808) to run off the windows print services, as opposed to running via AppleTalk.
The only things that I’m still really missing, are a good windows MP3 player (iTunes, so far, was seriously a cut above everything else) and most of the non-adobe typefaces that I use. (oh, meta! I never realized how much I depended on you ‘til you were gone!)
The other thing that’s on my mind, as I’m moving these files over, is getting a firewire card for my PC, so I can run the CD-RW from it, and set up a practical method of archiving/backup. Maybe I can scam a tapedrive off eBay.
I’m sure I’ll keep you all updated on every little step of the way, becase for god’s sake it sure seems like there’s nothing else interesting going on in my life. ;)
