Being the typical guy, at any given time, I have 4 pairs of shoes. Dress shoes, running shoes, sandals, and everyday shoes. For the past 5 years, my everyday shoes were a pair of black, suede, low-top chuck taylors that jessica got for me as a gift. These are the best pair of shoes I’ve ever owned, not to mention that lasting 5 years as everyday shoes is pretty amazing.
several months ago, while looking down at my feet, I realized that they were approaching the end of their life. I began the process of looking another pair of these marvels. I looked everywhere. Shoe stores; J.C. Penney’s; the converse website; anywhere that I could think of, all to no avail.
Feeling desperate, I even tried eBay (although the thought of buying even slightly used shoes, really bothered me). No luck. I figured that they were a limited edition, and that was that. I picked up a pair of regular chucks, and was done with it.
But I just couldn’t bring myself to part with the old shoes. They were suede. And damn it, they were so freaking comfortable. The new regular chucks just didn't compare. When I was still working at Agile, I told wendy about the situation, who proceeded to laugh at me. Several times she popped into my office, looked at my feet, and shook her head.
for the past several months, nothing in the situation has changed. I’m still wearing the old shoes everyday; and they’re still slowly decomposing on my feet. But, for whatever reason, when I woke up this morning, I decided to go back to the converse website, where I knew I would be able to get a pair of black suede low-top chucks.
And there they were, in all their glory.
Score. They’ll be shipped to my apartment in 3 days.
I probably should have ordered a couple pairs. That way, I could have shoes to last me for the next 20 years, or so… But, then again, who knows what kind of amazing shoe technology might be available in 2010.
