Battle Royale

I still didn't get the intro
Over the weekend, I watched Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale. I hadn’t actually read the comics that the movie was based on, and other than “it’s pretty good” type reviews, I had no idea what the movie was about.

Boy, I was sure as shit not expecting that. It is a seriously fucked up movie.

However, I think I enjoyed watching it (which maybe says something scary about me), and I’m torn on if I’d recommend it to someone else or not.

I’m still struggling to decide if there was more to the movie than just a gore delivery vehicle (ala Evil Dead), or if there was some kind of interesting social commentary buried in all the chaos. Katie thinks, no question, it was just a gory movie.

But I’m not so certain.

The thing that really kind of haunts me is how can remember clearly when I was in 7th grade having terrible dreams about being in an all out war with my classmates. I think this film did an interesting job at capturing the desperation and angst that you go through at that age—how these kids are performing these horrific acts to one and other, and yet, in the forefront of their minds is the crush they have on so-and-so.

But then again… maybe I’m just projecting my own psychosis onto it.
