American Gods

I finally finished Neil Gaimon’s American Gods tonight.

I know, I know. It took me forever to get through that last 100 pages.

It was a pretty interesting read. It was a little choppy, and bounced around a bit at times, but I enjoyed it all the same. When the lead character died with 100 or so pages left, it started to suck, but it picked up shortly after that.

There were some interesting ideas expressed: treating gods as very human creatures. That with out our (meaning the peoples) worship, they become old and tired. That they exist in the same plane of existence as we do, and yet go unnoticed. I really dug the whole part about people congregating to strange places, and how we’re drawn to these tourist attractions. I also liked the idea of the modern gods being television, and cars and such but I wish the story could have focused in a little more on who they were.

All in all though, I did enjoy it.

And, truth be told, it just feels good to be reading again. I’ll give it a couple days to settle in, and then I’ve got either Yonder Stands Your Orphan, or Perdido Street Station.
