In the natural progression of all that is “bloggieness”, from V-2 to kottke.org, I caught an interesting thread regarding America 2.0.
The basic point, is that any intelligent foreign politician would see many of the unjust (horrific?) things that are beginning to happen in the American government, and react by encouraging our government to continue, while making a haven for the American people in their country, creating a brain drain, if you will. (trying to compare what’s going on in the US today to Kristallnacht is rude, if you ask me)
In the 2 years that I’ve been writing here, with the exception to a possible rant about the DMCA, I haven’t mentioned much in terms of politics. And, that’s probably because, for the most part, I try not to get to emotionally involved in them. My views and beliefs don’t fit neatly into either political “agenda”, and watching people get so fired up about politics, frankly, turns me off.
I will say this though; while at first the idea of this America 2.0 was intriguing; after about 5 minutes of thinking about it (while I was eating my cheerios) I realized that it was actually pretty disgusting, elitist and offensive.
If people don’t like what’s going on in this country, then it is up to them to change it. That is what our country was founded on. How much blood has been shed to allow us that kind of freedom? If people do believe that John Ashcroft is a bad man, then it is their duty to oppose him—to stand up to the government, and call it out on the carpet.
Thinking that some other country is going to make a intellectual paradise, and lure only the “good” folks over there for some kind of creative renaissance is just plain foolish. Much like socialism, it sounds great on paper, but due to people being people, would never work in real life.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that this country is by any means perfect. There are a million things that the US, as a nation, could and should be doing better (coughhealthcarecough). But it’s our duty, as citizens to be supporting and electing the people that best fit our needs.
And forget about John Ashcroft being evil, the one you should be keeping your eye on is Michael Eisner; that mother fucker is the devil in the flesh.
