a list from mom

My mom wrote up this list of instructions on how to be a better person, and emailed them to me. It’s one of those things that’s funny, and interesting and touching all at the same time. She's my mom, there's no question about that.

  • Be good. (Whatever you do, do it well and try to do it with love.)
  • Look good. (Let the best in you shine through, both physically and spiritually.)
  • Be professional. (In the way you dress, speak, and conduct yourself.)
  • Be smart. (Be prepared; do your homework; don't say or do stupid things.)
  • Stay humble. (Don’t show off or try to take center stage; let others do that.)

  • Pay attention. (Try to get the full picture. Listen carefully and look people in the eye.)
  • Stay focused. (Don’t get sidetracked. Just deal with the task or issue at hand.)
  • Think first. (Take your time before you speak or write.)
  • Be positive. (There is no good to come from focusing on the negative.)
  • Be kind. (No need to criticize or ridicule anyone.)
  • Be polite. (Good manners and graciousness go a long way.)

  • Be ethical. (Be fair and honest in all your dealings.)
  • Deliver the goods. (Keep commitments; give a little more than the bargain calls for.)
  • Laugh often. (Look for the humor in things, and share it with others.)
