2024 was definitely a year of going to see live music for me. In one of the discords I’m in, the thread came up at the end of the year: What shows did you see this year? Paging through my photos library was a fun stroll down memory lane.
My lineup included:
- DJ Shadow—first time seeing him, wow, was that a killer show. Just a whole put together medly of years of his work, with some amazing visuals. Definintely a highlight.
- Diggable Planets—kirk took me to this, it was fun.
- Snail Mail—second or third time I’ve seen her; always a good show
- Cherry Glazerr—this was a last-minute buy when i had to stay the weekend in MSP for work. It was at the fineline, and it blew me away… I didn’t know how much of her music I knew.
- The Just like Heaven Festival (Metric, Miike Snow, Warpaint, Deathcab, Sleighbells, Phantogram, etc)—this was the first festival I’ve been to in 20+ years, so that was interesting. We did it VIP, and that made it really worth it. That said, festivals are a marathon, man. And we were zigging and zagging back and forth across the stages to cross the next act. We walked over 11 miles in total.
- Bully—another last minute grab. Wasn’t super familiar, but it was at cafe du nord, and the tickets were cheap.
- Beck playing with the Berkley Symphony—anniversary present for kate. And… wow, that was something.
- The Rolling Stones—tickets from daphne, as she couldn’t make it. Never was a huge fan of the stones, but this is something you do not pass up. And those old guys got down.
- Cults—my third(?) time seeing them? Good show, it was at Bimbo’s 365, which i haven’t been to in forever, and it’s super cool… but the sound kinda sucks.
- A block party with DJ Shadow, Nightmares on Wax and Thievery Corporation—it felt like it was 2001 all over again. Seriously fun.
- Banks—10th anniversary of her first album, Goddess, played front-to-back. I made a trek down to LA for this, and it was one of the highlights of the year.
- Washed Out—I’d seen him before the pandemic, but missed him at the JLH festival (sorry, sleighbells won on that match up)
- Yppah—He was opening for another band, but so cool to see live. Little tiny show.
- Fazerdaze–Also an opener, she only played from the new album, but it was still outstanding.
- Hannah Bahng–my kid is a kpop stan, so this was for her—but she was killer.
